Supplementary information
Dynamic carbon footprint – Tier 1
Description
This tool is aimed at calculating the climate change impact of biobased products by considering their carbon storage potential. It is a compromise between the LCA static approach and the dynamic LCA in case of climate change impact. The dynamic approach is recognized as more relevant when capture and emissions of CO2 take place in a system with time lags. The tool calculates the impact as GWP at 100 years after the beginning of the use stage.
Availability
The Tier 1 tool and an example in Excell with data from an EPD are stored in Zenodo repository. The Tier 1 tool at Dynamic Climate Change Tool (Tier 1) while the example at example EPD_LCA4BIO_Dynamic Climate change_Tool_Tier1.
Dynamic carbon footprint – Tier 2
Description
Climate Change Impact tool (CCI-tool) is a software for dynamic LCA in case of climate change impact. It uses the temporalized inventory of elementary flows (e.g. the GHG emissions) to calculate dynamic indicators based on consensus climate models from IPCC. Those indicators (radiative forcing RF, cumulated radiative forcing iRF, global mean temperature change GMTC, cumulated global mean temperature change iGMTC) are calculated in function of time. It contains all GHGs present in ecoinvent and IPCC databases
Availability
CCI-tool is available as calculator on-line https://zenodo.org/records/23064315 or its python code can be downloaded as a package, available on the same site. In addition, an excel file with the different steps to build the template with temporalized inventory is available in Zenodo repository at
Circularity
Description
This tool supports the identification of the most suitable circularity indicators for biobased systems and allows to calculate their values. It is meant for any stakeholder interested in carrying out a circularity assessment, in particular of a biobased product/system, and needs to identify the proper circularity indicator(s). The tool is suitable for various scales and various economic sectors, thus considering both different materials and products.
Availability
The tool is stored in an open Zenodo repository that can be accessed at Biocircularity compass
Other life cycle impact assessment methods
Description
Within LCA4BIO, relevant LCIA methods and impact categories for bio-based systems were reviewed and harmonized, with a focus on toxicity, water use, land use, biodiversity, and ecosystem services. Particular attention was given to temporal aspects, which were analysed through dynamic modelling of seven bio-based chemicals using adapted USEtox and Environmental Footprint toxicity models, complemented by a literature review of temporal approaches in other impact categories. The results provide a consolidated set of suitable LCIA methods and highlight current methodological gaps, supporting more consistent, accurate, and time-resolved environmental assessments in the bioeconomy.
Availability
The characterization factors for these methods were collected in the supporting information 1 excel file included in Deliverable 2.3, which is available in Zenodo repository at https://zenodo.org/records/23059357
