Sustainable and circular bio solution

Opening of the Public Consultation on the Life Cycle Assessment Standard for High-TRL Bio-Based Systems

LCA4BIO is launching a public consultation on a draft normative module for the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of high-TRL bio-based systems. Stakeholders across the bioeconomy value chain are invited to review the draft and the tools and submit their comments by 1 November 2026.

Help shape the future of LCA for bio-based systems

In recent years, the European Commission has adopted a range of policies aimed at promoting circular bio-based systems, reducing dependence on non-renewable resources and supporting the green transition of European industry.

As the bioeconomy continues to develop, reliable and applicable environmental assessment methods are needed to help identify the most appropriate technologies and assess the environmental performance of bio-based products compared with their fossil-based counterparts.

In this context, the LCA4BIO project is working on the development, improvement and harmonization of reliable Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodologies for high-TRL bio-based systems.

As part of this work, the LCA4BIO consortium has developed a draft normative module for future certification, using ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 as its reference framework. The development of the module has involved different stakeholders from across the bioeconomy value chain, helping to take their needs into account and assess the suitability of the proposed methodologies.

Why is the public consultation important

The public consultation represents an important step in the development of the methodology.

It provides an opportunity for stakeholders to review the proposed approach, identify potential areas for improvement and contribute additional insights based on their experience and expertise.

The feedback collected through the consultation will help assess the applicability of the proposed methodology and tools and ensure that it responds to the expectations and needs of relevant stakeholders.

Who is invited to participate?

The consultation is open to all stakeholders and organisations interested in LCA for high-TRL bio-based systems, with a particular focus on:

🏭 Industries working in the bioeconomy

🔬 Researchers and LCA practitioners

✅ Certification bodies

🌱 Other stakeholders across the bioeconomy value chain

Their feedback will contribute to the further development of the methodology and help ensure that it is relevant and applicable to the needs of the sector.

How to participate

Taking part in the consultation is straightforward.

  1. Download the draft normative module

The draft document is available here: Link to the document

  1. Review the document

Read the draft and consider the proposed methodology, identifying any comments, suggestions or aspects that could be improved.

  1. Submit your feedback

Once you have reviewed the document, please complete the LCA4BIO Public Consultation Feedback Form and share your comments and suggestions.

The form allows you to provide your feedback on the draft and indicate any aspects that you consider relevant for the further development of the methodology.

Consultation timeline

📅 Public consultation opens: 1 October 2026
📅 Public consultation closes: 1 November 2026

The consultation will remain open for at least 30 days, giving stakeholders sufficient time to review the draft and provide their feedback.

Your contribution can help improve the methodology and ensure that it responds to the practical needs of those working with bio-based systems.

Contributing to more robust LCA methodologies

The development of reliable and harmonised LCA methodologies is an important step towards supporting the sustainable development of bio-based systems.

By opening this draft module to public consultation, LCA4BIO aims to gather valuable input from the organisations and experts who work directly with bio-based systems, LCA and certification.

Your feedback can help ensure that the methodology is applicable to high-TRL bio-based systems, responds to the needs of the sector and is aligned with the ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 standards.
